Moving towards an abyss

Published Updated

It was illuminating to go through the article titled 'Leadership par excellence' by A B Shahid in Business Recorder in its May 31 edition. While the article itself is an excellent piece of writing, the predictions and the likely course of events indicated therein appear to be coming true over the past three years.
The gradual destabilisation of the country, through organised terrorist activities sponsored by the American CIA in collusion with terrorist outfits, should be an eye-opener for the saner elements of society. With a corruption-ridden political government in place (which has full US support in the name of democracy) and an equally incompetent defence establishment, the disintegration of Quaid's Pakistan may become real. After all, almost four decades ago, the Pakistan of 1947 was dismembered by greedy politicians and an over-ambitious military rulers combined, with the sole purpose of holding onto power.
The US has three goals in the region. One is the containment of China by fomenting trouble in this part of the world to dissuade Pakistan's neighbour from getting a foothold. Secondly, to dismantle the nuclear assets of the country. Thirdly, to gain control of the nation's economic wealth, especially abundant mineral/gas deposits in Balochistan and the huge coal deposits in Sindh.
The coming two/three years would be crucial in knowing the fate of the country. We are already on the edge of an abyss. We should wake up now, otherwise it may be the beginning of an end.
