Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has slammed the planned military operation in North Waziristan, which he believes would have serious consequences for the country, including increase in suicide attacks. Khan was addressing a function here on Monday, which was organised to welcome the activists of Rail Mazdoor Ittehad for joining PTI.
The PTI chief noted that immediately after the visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Pakistan, the military had planned to launch operation in North Waziristan. "It is an irony that while the US is endeavouring to engage the Taliban in a dialogue, Pakistan is being pressurised to launch a military operation in North Waziristan. We should also engage Taliban in a dialogue to resolve the problems," he said.
Imran Khan demanded of the government to resign, as according to him it was serving only the American interests. "A fresh election should be held in a transparent manner, which will pave the way for competent and honest leadership, as only those could steer the country out of troubled waters," he added. He also lamented the government for allowing the Chief of Army to directly negotiate with the Americans.
He was of the view that the army had no reason or justification to hold such negations/talks with foreigners; it is a job of politicians. "In future, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani should refrain from holding talks with the Americans. If the existing policy of military leadership continues then a revolt in the army is inevitable," he warned.
While welcoming the Rail Mazdoor Ittehad in his party, he announced formation of Insaf Labour Foundation on the occasion. He said the Foundation would struggle for the workers' rights and implementation of labour laws. He also pledged that PTI would not go back on its promises made to workers. On the occasion, Safraz Khan, chairman of Rail Mazdoor Ittehad, announced that a workers' convention would be held before June 30 on the PTI platform.
