Capital Police introducing new beat system, community policing

Following the people complaints regarding increase in crime rate in federal capital, particularly the street crime, the Capital Police have changed strategy and introduced new beat system and community policing. Under which, 28 officers of Inspector and Sub-Inspector rank would be appointed as Community Police Officers (CPOs) along with two officers of inspector rank as beat officers in every police station.
Although, stern steps were taken to control the crime, but no respite was seen in the out-going week in crime related incidents, as car lifting and snatching incidents along with theft, cheating and robberies remain a point of concern for the people of the City.
The data collected by Business Recorder from 14 police stations of the capital revealed that people were deprived of 16 vehicles and 12 motorcycles and other valuables including computers, laptops, gold ornaments, electronics etc worth millions of rupees.The data revealed that Islamabad Police have busted 12 gangs of criminals involved in possession of illegal arms, robberies, car snatching, theft, bootlegging and drug pushing.
The police data revealed that 106 outlaws including 12 women were arrested during the current week for their involvement in different crimes from whom, 12 stolen and tampered vehicles, besides other valuables, drugs and liqueur were recovered. The data revealed that out of 16 vehicles stolen or lifted during the week include two Toyota Corolla, three Khyber, two FX Suzuki, four Mehran, two Suzuki Bolan, one charade, one jeep and one pick along with 12 motorcycles including CG-125 and CD-70.
During the week police have recovered huge quantity of arms including 24 30-bore pistols, one 7mm gun, two 12-bore guns, one 44 mm gun, one dragger and over two hundreds rounds of different caliber and arrested 18 persons who were carrying the arms. During the week Islamabad Police have recovered drugs and liquor in four incidents and arrested ten drug pushers including two lady smugglers.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Wajid Ali Durrani has given the idea of community policing to ensure effective policing in the city by reviving beat system, a police official said, adding that it will work and very soon the crime rate in the capital will be brought to the lowest ebb.
