Two-day Pakistan-India talks on Sir Creek issue ended on Saturday on a positive note with both sides agreeing to continue dialogue process in future and date for the next meeting would be decided mutually. In the concluding session, both sides exchanged non-papers to take back to their governments in order to take their discussions forward with a view to finding an amicable settlement of the issue.
Under the resumption of dialogue process between Pakistan and India, delegations of the two countries met in Rawalpindi from May 20-21, 2011 to discuss the Sir Creek Issue. The Pakistan delegation was led by Rear Admiral Shah Sohail Masood, Additional Secretary Ministry of Defence. The Indian delegation was led by Subba Rao, Surveyor General of India. During the visit, the Indian delegation also called on Lieutenant General Syed Athar Ali, Secretary Defence.
The Ministry of Defence said that the talks were held in a friendly and cordial atmosphere. The two sides discussed the Pakistan-India land boundary in the Sir Creek area and the delimitation of International Maritime Boundary between Pakistan and India.
The dispute over the 100-km (60-mile) Sir Creek estuary has hampered exploration of oil and gas and led to the detention of hundreds of fishermen from the two countries when they stray across the poorly demarcated border. The last talks on Sir Creek dispute were held in 2007 as after the after Mumbai attacks all talks between Pakistan and India were suspended.
