The Australian and New Zealand dollars held firm near one-week highs against the greenback on Friday and outperformed a broadly weaker yen, driven by Japanese retail selling. But the Antipodeans were trapped in tight ranges amid a lack of fresh cues.
Having drifted in a small range between $1.0659 and $1.0678, the Aussie last stood at $1.0667, little changed from $1.0666 late in New York. The Australian dollar, which has lost nearly 3 pct so far this month, partly due to high volatility in commodities, hit a 29-year peak of $1.1012 on May 2.
Versus the kiwi, the Aussie lost some of its shine to last trade NZ$1.3476, struggling to make much headway after climbing off a two-week trough of NZ$1.3341 on May 12. The New Zealand dollar was becalmed in post-budget doldrums as it stayed in a wafer thin $0.7910-$0.7921 range, just a fraction above late New York levels. It has gained 0.6 percent this week.
