The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) launched its 'Volunteer Internet Based Environment Watch (VIEW)', website which is an Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Punjab funded project, here on Monday. Punjab Environment Secretary, Sajjad Saleem Hotiana inaugurated the website, who was accompanied by EPA Director General Dr Shagufta Shahjahan. Dr Jahangir Ikram, the project leader, and Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi, the Provost and the Acting Vice Chancellor of LUMS, were also present.
Secretary and EPA DG admired tireless efforts of the project team and its timely completion. He was of the view that there was still room for improvement in the website and there was a need to determine its target audience. Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi expressed that the university was committed to serve Pakistan in every aspect of life, including science and technology.
Dr Jahangir Ikram introduced the project and explained that how it would help the environmental agencies in getting the real time data of air pollution. It may be mentioned that VIEW was a live air quality monitoring system, which records different environmental parameters, for example, humidity, temperature, CO, ozone, NOX, and SOX, and provide that information live on the VIEW website. There are six to seven sensors working all over the city, including Baghbanpura, Garhi Shahu, Upper Mall, Awan Town, Cantt and Defence phase 2 and 3. The sensors are used for monitoring the humidity, temperature, carbon monoxide, Ozone, oxides of nitrogen and sulphurs. The software and hardware developed in this project is of low cost sensors and the result shown on the website after every five minutes. The website address is http://view.lums.edu.pk.
