Sport's highest tribunal has overturned an 18-month ban on a Hungarian club player allegedly targeted by match-fixers before a Champions League fixture but maintained a two-year ban on his Debrecen team mate. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) annulled the suspension imposed on Debrecen's Norbert Meszaros after deciding there was not enough evidence to suggest he had breached UEFA regulations.
However, CAS maintained a two-year ban on his team mate Vukasin Poleksic for failing to report the approach. Both players took part in the Champions League match at home to Fiorentina in October 2009 which the Italian side won 4-3. CAS said there was no evidence that the match had been manipulated. Both players were initially banned by UEFA last June and had appeals turned down by European soccer's governing body three months later. CAS said the case arose after investigations by German police and UEFA revealed that "a criminal gang was planning to manipulate the match within the framework of an organised betting fraud."
