Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Minister of Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs and Statistics, who is currently leading Pakistan's delegation to the 44th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Hanoi, Vietnam exchanged views with economic leaders on bilateral and mutual interests.
According to a message received here from Vietnam, the minister also briefed the leaders of the delegations on the economic progress made by Pakistan, the challenges being faced by Pakistan in the economic and development sectors and the steps being taken by the present government to overcome them. Dr Shaikh also held a series of meetings on the sidelines of the Board of Governors' Meeting on May 4, 2011 with leading heads of delegation of other countries attending the meeting.
The heads of delegation with whom the finance minister met included Dr Nguyen Van Giau, Governor State Bank of Vietnam and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the ADB Meeting, Dier Reyneeers, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Belgium, Elena Salgado, Vice President and Minister of Economy and Finance of Spain, Christine Lagarde, Finance Minister of France, Cesar Purisima, Secretary of Finance of Philippines and Abdul Qadeer Fitrat, Governor of the Central Bank of Afghanistan.
Later, Dr Shaikh attended on the sidelines of the ADB Governing Board, a meeting of the Finance Ministers of the SARRC member countries. Prior to this meeting, Haruhio Karuda, President of the Asian Development Bank briefly addressed the finance ministers. This was followed by a presentation by an ADB Team titled' Food Security in SAARC Countries - its Impact and Policy Responses". This was followed by a presentation to the finance ministers by an ADB Team titled' Food Security in SAARC Countries.
Later, Dr Shaikh attended a closed door meeting of the finance ministers of SAARC member countries, which was also attended by the Secretary General of SAARC. Addressing his SARRC counterparts the minister spoke at length on the challenges of food inflation and the policy responses by Pakistan to mitigate its impact including cash transfers through BISP.-PR
