Power shortfall has crossed again the alarming threshold of 5000MW during last 24 hours owing to short supply of fuel to thermal and snail-paced supply of water to hydel generation in the country. According to the Pepco daily brief, power generation stood at 11753MW against a demand of 16997MW, putting the gap to 5244MW.
It may be noted that the thermal generation is running two times short of fuel supply, as its monthly consumption is 33000 metric tones against a total supply of 11000 metric tones at present. The MD Pepco Rasul Khan Mehsud had mentioned a day earlier that fuel supply to thermal units is likely to be improved in two days that would bring down the shortfall considerably. Mehsud said the country was facing energy and not power shortage.
Meanwhile, the textile industry, which for the first time is facing gas shortage during summer season, has decided to cut down production capacity by 43 percent during the month of May. The APTMA EOGM has taken this decision on Wednesday in protest against the short supply of energy to the production units.
Also, the domestic consumers have started damaging the Pepco installations besides attacking the power distribution companies' offices in the country. A sizzling temperature with the end of winter has put the life of common man into a miserable situation where he is denied electricity while receiving hefty electricity bills on monthly basis.
The political repercussions of the situation are being described alarming for the ruling party, which is looking clueless on how to overcome the energy shortage in the country. Total power generation through hydel, thermal, IPPs and RPPs stood at 4408MW, 1426MW, 5857MW and 62MW respectively. Meanwhile, power supply to the KESC remained 760MW during last 24 hours.
