An American diplomat was briefly detained in Syria over the weekend, a US State Department official told AFP on Thursday. "A US embassy officer was detained and then released over last weekend. We protested this action with officials both in Damascus and in Washington," said the official. News of the incident was first reported in the Wall Street Journal.
Jeffrey Feltman, the US assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs, brought up the detention with Syria's ambassador to Washington, Imad Moustapha, during a meeting largely concerned with the country's political crisis. The State Department official did not release the name of the diplomat, who according to the Journal had been "roughed up." Washington has repeatedly condemned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's violent response to the country's protesters.
