Around 28 cops of Inspector and Sub-Inspector ranks working with Islamabad Police have been appointed as Community Police Officers (CPOs) in jurisdictions of all police stations to effectively control crime and curb activities of anti-social elements along with co-operation of community members and notables of the society.
The formal announcement of the new concept of policing was made by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Wajid Ali Durrani during his address to policemen on Thursday at National Library. SSP Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan, all Zonal SPs, SDPOs, Station House officers of all police stations and Beat in-charges were also present on the occasion.
Community Police Centres (CPC) will be established under this new system where Beat Books, Visitors Books will be kept. The beat book will have the whole information about the various important locations in the area of relevant police station while police officers will pen down their comments in the visitor-books during their visit to CPC.
The system would play an effective role in mounting intelligence and vigilance from the grass-root level besides curbing criminal activities. Likewise, the residents and the complainants would easily interact with the concerned police officers of their areas as the powers would be devolved to the lower level police officials, the IGP said. The IGP said that proper facilities would be provided to the CPOs while number of patrolling vehicles in Islamabad would be increased soon to effectively control crime.
Wajid Ali Durrani expressed firm resolve to make Islamabad police a corruption-free force as well as people friendly institution. The IGP urged the police officials to improve performance, which should be the reason to ask the government for resources.
He said that Police stations have the key role in justice system and complaints must be listened on merit. Durrani stressed the policemen to perform their duties with honesty and also warned the corrupt police officials be purged from the force. He also directed for strict vigilance at the police pickets and announced to award Rs 5,000 to policemen recovering stolen cars during checking.
He said sense of responsibility is the basic thing to ensure effective policing and this can only be inculcated through facilitating the police employees. For the same purpose, he said duty timing of police men have been reduced from 12 hours to 8 hours. Durrani said that police officials must take interest in investigation of cases and ensure justice with the people. "My job is to facilitate you, but you will have to prove the worth and make Islamabad police a distinguished force and a role model for other law enforcement agencies," he maintained.
