The Lahore High Court here Wednesday warned Punjab finance secretary of strict action if "Big City Allowance" was not given to teachers serving within the limits of city district government Lahore. An assistant advocate general on behalf of the government sought short adjournment and undertook that the matter will be resolved before next hearing of the case, May 3.
The court observed in written order, "If the matter is not resolved by next date, then it will have no other option but to proceed with the case in accordance with law." A senior headmaster at government high school Raiwind Road, Abdul Rashid filed a contempt of court petition submitting that secretary local government had issued a notification on June 29, 2005 with regard to provision of "Big City Allowance" to all teachers serving within the limits of city district government Lahore.
But the said allowance was never paid to the teachers, therefore, a writ petition was filed before the high court, he said. The court on November 14, 2008 deciding the petition in favour of teachers had directed the secretary finance to issue notification for the grant of the allowance. However, the secretary had filed an intra court appeal against that order but the same was dismissed, petitioner said and added that the order of the single bench attained finality as no any other appeal was pending before high court or supreme court. Petitioner therefore prayed to the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the respondent authorities for not complying with the court order.
