US gold hits record

US gold futures rallied to a record high near $1,500 an ounce on Monday after Standard & Poor's downgraded its credit outlook for the United States and as investors worried about debt in the eurozone and inflation in China. COMEX June gold futures settled up $6.9 at $1,492.9 an ounce. Ranged from $1,477.8 to $1,498.6 an ounce - a record. Spot gold rose 0.8 percent at $1,495.20 an ounce by 2:52 pm EDT (1852 GMT) for a four-session winning streak.
COMEX May silver closed up 38.5 cents at $42.956 an ounce, tracking gold. Range extended from $42.200 to $43.560 an ounce. Spot silver gained 0.5 percent to $43.21 an ounce, having earlier hit a 31-year high at $43.51 an ounce.
PLATINUM: NYMEX July platinum finished down $12 at $1,782.80 an ounce on profit-taking. Spot platinum gained 0.1 percent to $1,787.99. NYMEX June palladium closed down $29 or 3.8 at $739.10 an ounce, following platinum. Spot palladium rose 0.7 percent to $766.22.
