Overseas shares traded in the United States rose on Friday as Japanese companies climbed higher after a steep sell-off this week. But investors remained cautious about overseas stocks as Japan's nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear station continued. The BNY Mellon index of leading Asian ADRs gained 0.8 percent, but the index was still off 3.3 percent for the week.
In Asia, Japanese shares jumped nearly 3 percent and the yen tumbled after the Group of Seven agreed on rare joint intervention to curb the soaring currency and calm markets jittery over Japan's nuclear power plant crisis. Japanese financial stocks like Nomura and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial rose after declining for most of the week. Nomura shares rose 2.4 percent to $5.53 and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial gained 1.9 percent to $4.75.
Mizuho Financial Group also gained 2.9 percent to $3.57. But bellwether Toyota Motor lost 0.6 percent to $81.59 after recovering most of its weekly losses on Thursday. The BNY Mellon index of leading American Depository Receipts (ADRs) was up 0.9 percent while the US benchmark S&P 500 index rose 0.4 percent.
The BNY Mellon index of leading European ADRs was up 0.9 percent. Among European companies, insurance groups rebounded, with Prudential PLC rising 3 percent to $22.89. The BNY Mellon index of leading Latin American ADRs rose 1 percent.
