US gold ends up

Published Updated

US gold futures ended higher on Wednesday but the metal struggled to extend gains following the previous day's sharp decline, as panic selling in the equity markets prompted investors to sell bullion to cover losses. GOLD: COMEX April gold futures settled up $3.30 at $1,396.10 an ounce on the COMEX division of the NYMEX.
Range ran from $1,392.30 to $1,406.60 an ounce. Bullion ended well off its session highs as Wall Street briefly wiped out gains for 2011, with quake-crippled Japan raising concerns about slower world-wide economic growth. Spot gold gained 0.2 percent to $1,396.70 an ounce at 3:49 pm EDT (2049 GMT).
COMEX May silver finished up 35.5 cents or 1 percent at $34.472 an ounce on gold's rise. Range spanned $33.845 to $35.080 an ounce. Spot silver eased 0.3 percent to $34.17 an ounce. London silver fix at $34.73 an ounce. NYMEX April platinum fell $5.10 to $1,700.50 an ounce. Spot platinum slipped 0.5 percent to $1,691.74 an ounce. NYMEX June palladium ended up 15 cents at $705.05 an ounce on short covering. Spot palladium dropped 1.6 percent to $692.97.
