The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to hold complete audit regarding fire prevention and life safety of category-II, III and IV buildings as per 'CDA Building Standards for Fire Prevention & Life Safety 2010' and 'Islamabad Fire Prevention & Life Safety Regulations 2010'.
Following the directives of CDA chief, Imtiaz Inayat Elahi, the Directorate of Building Control Service of the authority has decided to notify the buildings in different phases. Category-II buildings are being notified in the first phase that includes two story buildings, industries and all other non-residential buildings, except farmhouses. Category-III includes non-residential buildings up to the ground floor plus five floors whereas category-IV includes all high rise buildings of ground floor plus six floors and above.
Elahi said that in the wake of the natural or manmade disasters, safety measures have become imperative. Islamabad has faced a number of major fire incidents in the past, which inflicted heavy men and material losses. He said that the CDA-established directorate of emergency and disaster management is fully equipped with the latest machinery and training.
He informed that government has formally notified CDA Building Standards for Fire Prevention & Life Safety 2010" and "The Islamabad Fire Prevention & Life Safety Regulations 2010" prepared by the authority in order to improve and regulate the process to prevent and mitigate effects of disasters and emergencies, especially fire. With the publishing of these regulations in the official gazette of Pakistan, all existing buildings constructed before the promulgation of the regulations are now under legal obligations to take measures and install all required equipment within six months, he added.-PR
