Overcoming financial losses: Railways asked to improve its management

Special Committee of National Assembly's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday directed the Pakistan Railways to improve its management and take drastic steps to tap resources for overcoming huge financial losses the department is facing at present.
The committee was astonished on revelation of audit officials that it was not in their knowledge that certain audit objections regarding Ministry of States and Frontier Regions (Safron) had previously been settled. Pakistan Muslim League (N) parliamentarian, Zahid Hamid chaired the special committee meeting on Tuesday to review the audit objections pertaining to Safron and Pakistan Railways for the years 1989-90 and 1990-91.
In the meeting, Safron was directed to handle irregularities committed by certain officials in line with rules and regulations. The committee further directed the Director Federal Audit to sit with the ministry and resolve pending matters amicably. Reviewing the audit of Pakistan Railways, Zahid Hamid pointed out that lack of planning and co-ordination within the PR was hammering the department. He said the waste of national resources must be plugged. He further directed the management of Pakistan Railways to improve its performance to help in bringing down the fares.
