Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that there is a need to give up reliance on the charity of others and develop indigenous resources for achieving self sufficiency. He said if the whole nation makes a firm resolve in this regard, Pakistan could make rapid progress and achieve a respectable status in the comity of nations. He is ready to make every sacrifice for the country, he added.
He was addressing a 5-day Pakistan Urban Forum 2011 on the topic of 'Management Urbanisation: The Road To Development' arranged by Planning & Development Department at Alhamra Hall on Tuesday. Provincial Minister for Law Rana Sanaullah Khan, Advisor Begum Zakiya Shahnawaz, Member Provincial Assembly Hafiz Mian Nauman, Chairman Planning & Development Javed Aslam, Project Director Urban Unit Dr Nasir Javed, foreign delegates and experts in different sectors from all over the country were present.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the Chief Minister appreciated the holding of Pakistan Urban Forum by Planning & Development department and said that it will bring about a pleasant change not only in Punjab but other cities of the country as well. He said that delegates from all over the world are attending the forum which will provide an opportunity to benefit from their experiences and expertise. He said that eighteen crore people of Pakistan want to live in better and healthier surroundings, therefore, there is a need to make rapid progress in this regard.
He said that Lahore is the heart of Pakistan and an agreement has been reached with Istanbul municipality for the cleanliness of the city. He said that the project will cost only 0.45 million dollars and had this agreement been made with some other country it would have cost a lot more. He said it is due to the love of the government and people of Turkey that they are ready to extend every help and assistance to their Pakistani brethren.
He said that the agreement of Solid Waste Management has been reached due to the personal efforts of the Mayor of Istanbul and Turk experts have also reached Pakistan for its implementation. He said that innumerable housing schemes were started in the past but despite the claims of builders, water supply and drainage system as well as other basic amenities were not provided.
He said that in addition to improve the infrastructure, Punjab government is also initiating Aashiyana Housing Project for providing shelter to the low-income people and a site closest to Lahore has been selected for launching the first low-cost housing scheme.
