Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said on Saturday that the government believes in freedom of expression and abolition of draconian laws of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority framed by previous governments is a manifestation of this resolve.
He was talking to the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, who called on him at the Prime Minister's House on Saturday. Gilani said that an independent media is essential for democracy to take roots and government has always appreciated positive criticism by media. Highlighting the role of media as an important state pillar, he said that its main objective is to inform, educate and entertain the society. Government is providing all possible facilities to enhance the capacity of media to make it more vibrant, he added.
He observed that in this age of information, media could play an effective role to promote the soft image of the country and protect national interests. He asked the minister to formulate a media-friendly policy in consultation with all the stakeholders and in line with the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
Appreciating the maturity of print and electronic media, Gilani said that induction of seasoned journalists in different media organisations, is heartening and a step towards professionalism. He stressed upon the efforts to sensitise youth towards national issues.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting apprised the Prime Minister of the working of her ministry and assured him to bridge the gap between government's public relation machinery and media organisations. She thanked the Prime Minister for his support to ensure freedom of media.
