Algeria buys 200,000 tonnes of wheat

Algeria's state grains agency OAIC has purchased at least 200,000 tonnes of milling wheat in a tender for a nominal 50,000 tonnes issued this week, European traders said on Thursday. Algeria is among countries in north Africa and the Middle East which has been trying to curb high food prices which in turn have contributed to social unrest.
No details were available of price or likely origin. Algeria traditionally buys more than its tender volumes. Some traders said extra purchases could still be made. "It seems that the purchase this time is more modest that the previous tender although there are estimates that 300,000 tonnes will be bought this time," one trader said. On January 26 Algeria surprised grain markets by purchasing a huge 800,000 tonnes of wheat. The latest tender had sought shipment in May and June.
