Effective measures are being taken not only to curb car lifting incidents, but also to ensure safe road environment in the Federal Capital, said Wajid Ali Khan Durrani, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad here on Wednesday.
Co-operation between police and public is imperative for effective policing and the available resources will be used to bring improvement in performance of the Capital Police and ensure protection to the lives and property of citizens, Durrani said while talking to media after prize distribution ceremony for the position holders of a declamation contest `Role of students in checking road accidents' arranged by Islamabad Traffic Police in collaboration with Atlas Honda in connection with its 5th anniversary.
Responding to a question, the IGP said that ITP would re-start issuing of traffic licences within a week.
"I have reviewed the performance of Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) after assuming the charge and its performance is very much satisfactory, as the force has succeeded in ensuring safe road environment in the city within a very short span of time. He said that ITP is doing its best for safer road environment in Capital and has involved community in its affairs. Its teams are visiting educational institutions to create traffic sense and several students have joined ITP as traffic volunteers.
SSP (Traffic) Dr Moeen Masood said that Islamabad Traffic Police has involved community in various policing affairs to ensure safe road environment. Dr Moeen said that ITP has emerged as a role model for other police organisations and it ensured policy of zero tolerance and eliminated VIP culture as per its objectives. He said that ITP FM radio channel 92.4 is creating awareness among the people and also a source of real-time information for road users, thus streamlining traffic flow.
IGP Wajid Ali Durrani also thanked the National Manager Atlas Honda Nisar Zaman and Customer Care and Road Safety Manager Atlas Honda Tasleem Shuja for co-operation in arranging the contest. They also announced to start a quiz competition through registration of students at www.atlashonda.com.pk and to award motorbikes to winners. They said that a road safety campaign along with ITP will be started from February 14 to educate motorcyclists about the use of indicators.
The students of various educational institutions from twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi came with innovative ideas to maintain traffic discipline in the city and ensure safe road environment and avoid fatal accidents. IGP attended ceremony as Chief Guest while DIG/Headquarters Kamal UD Tipu, SSP (Traffic) Dr Moeen Masood and SP (Traffic) Mir Vais Niaz, SP (Operations) Farhat Abbass Kazmi, President ICCI Mehfooz Elahi, DSP (Traffic) Ms Khadeeja, Programme Co-ordinator ITP Ayesha Jameel and other police officials were also present on the occasion.
Qasim Idress from Arid Agriculture University got first position in the contest, while Zohaib Chan from Commerce College H-8/4 Islamabad, Javeria Mughal from IMCCW F-10/3 and Ameena Firdous from Arid Agriculture University obtained second, third and forth positions respectively.
