Punjab Minister for Agriculture, Malik Ahmad Ali Aulakh taking strict notice of presence of unregistered cottonseeds in the market, has directed the Director General Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department to take action against it.
Sources in the provincial agriculture department told Business Recorder on Wednesday that a meeting was recently convened by the Minister for Agriculture at Multan to discuss the production plan of Cotton 2011. The minister expressing concern over the presence of unregistered cottonseeds in the market asked the Federal Seed Certification department to take action against the persons involved in it under the provision of Seed Act 1976.
He said that all out efforts should be made to enhance production of cotton crop in the province. He said that 'weed control to produce more cotton' should be adopted as the slogan this year to mobilise the farmers and all stakeholders for getting maximum production this year.
According to the sources a detailed presentation was made by the Director General Agriculture (Ext and AR), Dr Muhammad Anjum Ali on the cotton plan 2011, which was approved with the instructions that germination test before sowing for exact seed rate to ensure optimum plant population, weed control, irrigation at critical stages, balanced use of fertiliser and plant production measures will be the main parameters of this year's cotton plan. The minister directed the department that this year whole cotton plan should revolve around the slogan 'weed control to produce more cotton' to eradicate weeds from now till the month of October to avoid the spread of CLCV, Plant competition and pest evidence.
