Ukraine 2017 white beet sugar production 1.5mn T so far

Published November 20, 2017 Updated November 20, 2017 10:47pm

KIEV: Ukraine has produced 1.5 million tonnes of white sugar from the 2017 sugar beet harvest as of Nov. 17, the volume that covers all Ukrainian domestic needs, the Ukrtsukor sugar makers' union said on Monday.

Ukrtsukor has said that 46 sugar refineries would process beet this year and total output could reach 2 million tonnes.

The country is able to export about 460,000 tonnes of the commodity this season, it said in a statement.

Ukraine consumes about 1.5 million tonnes of sugar a year and produced 2 million tonnes of white sugar from beet in 2016.

The country produced about 5 million tonnes of white beet sugar a year during Soviet times but has cut production sharply because of a lack of export markets in the face of competition from cheaper cane sugar.
