OTTAWA: Canada will announce Monday new sanctions to pressure Iran amid renewed suspicion over its nuclear ambitions, a government source told AFP.
"The question is not if, but rather the degree to which we will respond to the IAEA report," said the official who asked not to be named, alluding to a report by the UN atomic energy watchdog strongly suggesting Iran was researching nuclear weapons.
Ottawa will make an announcement on what measures it will take later in the day, the official said.
The move appears to be part of a coordinated effort by Western governments to isolate Iran in the absence of further multilateral UN sanctions, after Britain and France called for a freeze on Iran's oil sales and cutting off ties with its banks.
The United States was also Monday to unveil new sanctions targeting its financial, oil and petro-chemical sectors, according to US officials.
Iran strongly denies its nuclear program is geared towards making atomic weapons and argues that it is for civilian energy purposes.
