KIGALI: Consumer prices in Rwanda rose by 0.58 percent in October from a month earlier, while the urban rate of inflation rose to 7.76 percent from 6.64 percent in September, as food and transport costs rose.
Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices, which have a heavy weighting in the Consumer Price Index, were up by 9.61 percent over the same month a year ago, and 1.46 percent higher than September, the National Institute of Statistics Of Rwanda said.
Also rising was the cost of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, which increased 5.08 percent from the same period a year ago, while transport prices in urban areas rose by 11.86 percent.
Rwanda has fared better than other countries in east Africa, including Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, where inflation is in double-digits.
Rwanda's central bank raised its key repo rate by 50 basis points to 6.50 percent last week after increasing forecasts for both growth and inflation this year, with inflation expected to hit 8.2 percent by end 2011.
