The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has acquired TPS-77 radars from Lockheed Martin, USA. This was announced in a press release of Directorate of Media Affairs, PAF, here on Monday. It said that these radars incorporated the state of the art technology and belonged to the latest generation.
TPS-77 are the only radars developed in the world till date which had the unique capability to provide valley coverage and long-range detection capabilities. With the induction of these systems, Pakistan would have the capability to curb the drug traffickers' unrestricted movement into the borders from its neighbouring countries, it said.
The induction ceremony to formally hand over the system to Pakistan Air Force was held on Monday at one of the air force bases in Karachi area. Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force, was the chief guest at the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood said the induction of TPS-77 radars marked yet another important milestone in the PAF's modernisation plan, which would give a tremendous boost to the PAF's existing integrated air defence network.
He also stressed upon the air defence operators and the technical staff to excel in their professionalism and strive for making Pakistan Air Force second to none. He mentioned the long-term strategic relationship between Pakistan and United States Air Forces, and desired for the continuation of support for Pakistan Air Force to further modernise its capabilities.
The ceremony was also attended by the senior officials from the United States government and Lockheed Martin, USA. Among the other attendees were the Principal Staff Officers from Air Headquarters and senior officials from Pakistan Air Force.
