A dangerous criminal and proclaimed offender (PO) Arshad Toor, wanted in over 50 cases, was killed in a police encounter at Umida Lakhuka near here early Sunday morning, while his two accomplices managed to escape.
Police told newsmen that three armed men stopped a motorcyclist Muhammad Zaman at gunpoint near Chak 291-EB at around 5.00 am on Sunday morning, and decamped with his cash and motorbike.
On being informed, a Sahuka police team led by Inspector Rashid Taheem and SI Rana Yunus chased the culprits, who abandoned the motorbike on the road and fled into the forest area near Umida Lakhuka.
The accused shot at the police party who returned fire, and one of the accused was killed in the ensuing shootout which lasted about 20 minutes. The other two managed to escape. Police have taken the body, a 7-mm rifle and a bag full of ammunition, as well as the abandoned motorbike in custody.
The killed PO was wanted in kidnapping and murder of a Khanewal police inspector Rana Saeed Ahmed over a year ago, and in over 50 other cases of dacoities, kidnapping and rape by the police in districts Vehari, Pakpattan, Bahawalpur and Khanewal.
