India sugar output crosses 28 million tonnes

Sugar output in India has crossed a record 28 million tonnes so far in the year to September 2007, and production is likely to touch 30 million tonnes next year, a trade source said on Friday. The world's second-largest producer churned out 19.3 million tonnes in the sugarcane crushing season to September 2006.
"By the end of this season, production will touch 28.5 million tonnes and should reach a massive 30 million tonnes next year," the source told Reuters. Farm Minister Sharad Pawar in June said sugar output had touched 27 million tonnes this year, and an additional 800,000 to a million tonnes would be produced by the end of September.
