A special official team has inspected Mirani Dam and submitted report to the government that said despite high flood in Balochistan the newly built dam was structurally 100 percent safe.
The team, comprising Planning Commission member Lieutenant General Zubair (Retd), Engineering Chief of the army, Lieutenant General Shahid Niaz, Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) Director General, Major General, Javed and Wapda member water, Mushtaq Ahmed, visited Mirani Dam early this weak to check the effect of the recent devastating flood.
The team inspected all the important sites and installations and later reported to the government that Mirani Dam despite touching maximum water storage level and intense flood in Balochistan was totally safe.
The report said "Mirani Dam had high level of water storage and flow due to recent flood in Balochistan and after day-long inspection, the committee reports with full satisfaction that its structure and other parts were strong and capable of optimal level of storage. The committee, however, suggested some precautionary measures to ensure that the dam faces any flood-like situation in future without any problem.
Lieutenant General Zubair, member of the special committee told this correspondent on Friday that the committee visited Mirani Dam on the instructions of Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, this week and later submitted its report to all the concerned ministries/ departments.
He said "High level of flood in Balochistan did not damage any of its structure but as a precautionary measure, the committee suggested Wapda to strengthen guide walls for any future eventuality. Wapda will prepare the plan as suggested by the special committee and submit it before the Planning Commission in couple of weeks.
Mirani Dam is one of the major water reservoir projects being constructed by the government to increase water storage capacity. It has 1.52 MAF storage capacity. Its main storage has been completed and work on other parts such as canals and channels is in progress.
