National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence Production on Friday recommended that the land of Karachi Port Trust may be transferred to Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW). The Committee meeting chaired by Ms Fiza Junejo, MNA discussed the report of the Sub Committee regarding the revival of the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW).
The Committee discussed the report of the sub-committee, unanimously adopted it and applauded the role of sub-committee for preparing a comprehensive report regarding revival of KSEW. It was observed that most of its equipment are obsolete and needs immediate attention as KSEW is a gold mine and could earn huge revenue.
The committee strongly recommended to resolve the issue of issue of Provident Fund of their Employees. The Committee also decided to approach the Prime Minister in this regard. Appreciating the efforts of Management of KSEW Ms Fiza Junejo said, KSEW has immense potential to earn foreign exchange due to its geographical location but its importance had been ignored in the past.
She desired serious efforts to make KSEW a vital asset of the country and improved its condition, which had deteriorated with the passage of time.
Earlier, Lieutenant General (Retd) Shahid Siddiq Tirmizey, Secretary Ministry of Defence Production apprised the committee of the problems being faced by the management of KSEW in the way of revival and efforts being made to improve its performance.
MNAs Tahir Bashir Cheema, Abdul Waseem, Ms Razia Aziz, Tasneem Ahmed Qureshi, Zammurd Khan Advocate and Mrs Shakeela Khanam Rashid were present at the meeting. Senior Officers of the Ministry also attended the meeting.
