Four police personnel were shot dead in an ambush attack on a police van by unknown armed persons during wee hours of Thursday in Mattani, a suburban locality of Peshawar. The police party was on routine patrol when the attackers open fire on it in Janey Ghari area on Kohat Road in Mattani.
The local police had confirmed that a head constable and three cops have been died on the spot. Another policeman and a Frontier Constabulary personnel, who sustained injuries in the attack have been shifted to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH). The deceased have been identified as Hawaldar Wasil Khan, Muhammad Iqbal and Hidayat constables and driver of the mobile van Sher Afzal. The injured are Abid and Akhtar Muneer.
Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Operations, Tahir Khan has also confirmed the deaths. However, he declined to link the attack with militancy. He said that probe into the incident and hunt for the arrest of the attackers were in progress.
It has a worth to mention here that Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police Bannu Abid Ali was also killed on the same road about six months back. Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) NWFP Muhammad Sharif Wirk has announced Rs 0.5 million cash compensation for the heirs of the deceased police personnel.
The provincial police further announced the recruitment of one child of each deceased in police while the family members will also be given a plot in a residential housing scheme in the provincial capital.
