Raw sugar shipments to Russia are flowing steadily and market sources on Wednesday noted Iraqi enquiries to buy refined sugar and freight enquiries to move raw sugar to Iran. A freight broker reported enquiries from several merchants to ship routine volumes of raw sugar from south Brazil to the Black Sea this month.
A decision on whether or not to recommend imposition of a seasonal raw sugar import duty in Russia has been postponed until later this month. If the duty is introduced, effective from January 1, 2008, traders anticipate a jump in cash raw sugar imports to Russia later this year.
Dealers also noted freight enquiries by a couple of merchant houses to move raw sugar to Iran this month, as well as the occasional quote to ship a modest tonnage of 45-ICUMSA white sugar from south Brazil to Umm Qasr port in Iraq this month. Iraq's state-run Food Stuff Company has issued a tender to buy an unspecified quantity of sugar and other food, the company said on Wednesday on its website.
