Government has estimated 5.4 million tons of rice production for the financial year 2006-07. An official source, food and agriculture ministry on Tuesday said that last year rice production was 5.5 million tons, thus indicating decline of 2 percent in total rice cultivation in the country.
"Rice is the most important exportable crop of the country, it earns huge foreign reserves as well as fulfils domestic needs. He said the ministry had taken several incentives to boost rice production in the country.
While giving details, he said, under rice cultivation in FY 2007-08, a total of 2594.25 million hectare area was tilled for rice cultivation and 2666.40 million tons as target to produce as compared to 2581.50 million hectare in last financial year. He said there was a rising demand for Basmati rice, across the world for its fragrance and good taste, he said.
"Area under Basmati cultivation has also been increased by 1489.0 million hectare and 2666.40 million tons production has been prepared to produce this year as compared to the total area of 1474.24 million hectare and total production of 2493 million tons in 2006-07. He said total area under rice crop cultivation has also been increased in the four provinces.
