Hong Kong is a success story of one-government-two-systems as it has got more prosperity and development after its handing over to China 10 years ago. These views were expressed by Chinese Consul in Karachi, Chen Shin Min while speaking at 10th anniversary of Hong Kong Hand Over to China organised by the Pak-China Cultural & Businessmen Society at a local hotel here on Sunday.
The Chinese Consul General said the people of Hong Kong were enjoying more liberty and democratic rights than Britain era. Hong Kong is a part of China but it is being run under the theory of one-government-two-systems. Now Hong Kong is a hub of world trade, finance, business and shipping activity. The annual growth rate of Hong Kong had reached 6 percent, which is tremendous achievement, he said.
There were many rumours that Hong Kong would not survive under China at the time of its handing over to China, but the continuous growth and prosperity of Hong Kong proved the successes of this new system. Hong Kong is given more autonomy by the central government of China and the people of Hong Kong are living happily with their previous way of life. The central government does not interfere in the local affairs of Hong Kong people. They have their own customs, own tax and local administration system. The central government looks after only foreign affairs, defence and other affairs mostly related to foreign affairs.
He pointed out that a number of Pakistani origin people are living in Hong Kong and contributing for the prosperity of Hong Kong.
Chen Shan Min said Pakistan and China were enjoying very close relations. He thanked the government and the people of Pakistan for their favour for handing over Hong Kong to China from the Britain government.
Speaking on the occasion, Aga Masood Hussain said that Hong Kong was occupied by Britain in 1842 war with China. However, being the part of China the Britain government had to hand over it to China. He lauded the efforts of Chinese government and its people for a long struggle to get Hong Kong from the Britain government.
He pointed out that Hong Kong had become a hub of international business. Its stock market is one of the fastest growing markets in the world. Anwar Iqbal, Chairman, Pak-China Cultural & Business Society, Saghir Hassan General Secretary and members of executive committee were also present on this occasion.
