Islamic unity

Published July 1, 2007 Updated July 1, 2007 12:00am

Islamic unity and economic political co-operation among the Muslim countries is the greatest need of the Islamic world. The great Muslim thinkers like Jamal-Uddin Afghani and Allama Iqbal enlivened this great concept which came to be named pan-Islamism.
The creation of Israel and its aggression toward Arabs have aggravated the situation. The non-Arab Muslim countries also fully realised that the happenings in the Middle-East seriously required their resistance and co-operation. The first step to unite the Muslims of the world was the holding of Rabat conference.
It was mainly an effort to unite the Muslims politically and get the support of other Muslim countries against Israel. The second Islamic summit conference was held in Lahore on 22nd February 1974. It was unique in this respect that 37 independent Muslim countries were brought on one platform. Hassan-al-Tahami was the secretary general of this conference. This conference proved that all Muslims are united.
The conference considered not only the political problems of the Arabs but many economic and social problems were also discussed. Different committees were formed to study and examined the possibilities of exchange of goods, services and experts.
The possibilities of a common Muslim market and the common currency were also discussed. The establishment of an Islamic bank was also decided in which all the Arab countries will keep their money. The conference resolved to continue struggle till Israel vacates the illegal territories of Jordan, Syria and the city of Jerusalem and the rights of Palestinian people are recognised.
