At a speed of 100 to 140 km/hour at some places, are expected in Punjab during the next 48 hours. This could cause massive damage to kacha houses, uprooting trees, felling poles and billboards, and heavy flooding.
Chief Meteorologist Shaukat Ali Awan issued this warning in a report on Saturday. He said that a deep monsoon depression (rainstorm) was moving north-westwards to Punjab and Sindh.
According to him, high flood was expected in Chenab (Jummu Tavi and Munawarwali Tavi). Most of the districts in Punjab along the border in the east and also in eastern Sindh including Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Mithi, Umerkot, Sanghar are likely to be affected. In a special weather advice issued by Director-General Relief and Crisis Management Office, all DCOs have been directed that they should keep constant vigilance and take all necessary measures to meet any untoward situation in case of heavy rain or flood. All concerned departments and agencies have also been directed to remain alert and vigilant.
Meanwhile, the Met Office said that tropical cyclone 'Yemyin' had considerably weakened and, after bypassing the coast on Saturday, it lies as a well-marked seasonal low over Balochistan's adjoining Iran. The waves from over north of Kashmir were moving eastwards.
The Met Office forecast that scattered rainfall of moderate intensity may occur over north-east Balochistan and adjoining Sindh along the Makran coast. The emerging situation may put the water situation at big dams in severe danger. Currently, the water level in Tarbela dam measured at 1436.85 feet and in Mangla dam at 1182.25 feet.
