PML-N leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has called for holding general elections in the country in a fair, free and transparent manner besides providing level playing field to all the contestants. He stated this while talking to a delegation of doctors from Sindh province at his central London office.
Expressing fears over possible violations of the Charter of Democracy (CoD), Nawaz said that if there were any breach of the agreement on the part of its signatories, this could affect the process of democracy in the country. The consequences of this infringement would be 'unimaginable' for Pakistan, he opined.
It may be mentioned that the Charter of Democracy was signed by Nawaz Sharif and his one-time bitter rival Benazir Bhutto in London in 2005 to promote democracy in Pakistan.
According to a message received here on Saturday, Nawaz said that although the four federating units of Pakistan were unequal in terms of population but for his party, they were of the same importance. He said those provinces that lagged behind others in development should have priority over resources of the federation.
He claimed that his government gave maximum attention to the needs of Sindh province by providing land to the landless Haris, improved law and order situation and launched free dialysis treatment for the sick. The PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif spoke on the achievements of the party in Sindh and mentioned the Water Apportionment Accord and the NFC Award on top of the list.
