Malir River rising, Dumlottee wells overflowing

The water level in the Malir River basin and Dumlottee wells area has registered an increase of 10 to 20 feet. It may be mentioned here that water is also pumped from the Dumlottee water wells by the KWSB besides the water supply from river Sindh via the Keenjhar lake and the Hub dam.
The abadgars in the Gadap and other towns of Karachi including some parts of Malir and Orangi reported that the level in the water wells in these areas had gone up.
The water level in the Malir river basin had gone down in the past years due to heavy drawing of subsoil water both for drinking purposes and for agriculture.
The pumping of water from the Dumlottee wells by the KWSB also added to the water supply volume in Karachi but the sub soil water level fell. In some cases the level had gone down to seventy to ninety feet below.
It may be mentioned here that when the Dumlottee water wells were developing for pumping drinking water to Karachi, the water level in the wells was just fifteen to twenty feet below. But this level had fallen to as much as seventy and eighty feet below, due to overdrawing and non-replenishment of the sub soil reserves due to scarcity of rains almost each year for two decades, according to informed sources.
