Sindh health department has procured additional amount of water purifiers (in tablets and powder form) from Unicef for urban slums dwellers in particular and families in general to prevent water borne diseases - including gastro-enteritis.
Special Secretary for Health (Preventive), Dr Abdul Majid told APP here on Thursday that the department has already provided chlorine tablets, ORS sachets besides essential drugs to 21,000 of its lady health workers.
"Each of these workers are assigned to visit a minimum cluster of 100 houses, on door to door basis, hence handling almost 50% of the population," Abdul Majid said.
The secretary mentioned that all health care facilities spread across the province have also been provided chlorine tablets, ORS, antibiotics and medicines required to treat skin diseases, eye infections and stomach disorders including diarrhoea.
To a question, he said children allowed to play in dirty pool of water are increasingly reporting with skin infections, mainly scabies, and government health facilities are well prepared to handle it.
With regard to any reported surge in the incidence of gastro-enteritis, he said no unusual increase has been reported from any part, however, chances for the same always remain high after spells of rain. Dr Abdul Majid warned that outbreak of malaria is also possible due to the fact that standing water pools are potential breeding points for mosquitoes.
He appealed to the masses to masses to ensure spraying kerosene oil or mobil oil on pools and puddles standing before their houses or with their residential premises. The secretary said that citizens can also complain of standing at their near by health facilities which have arrangements to get it reported with concerned agencies equipped with de-watering gadgets.
