Around 13,520 emergency travel documents have been issued by the embassies of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to illegal nationals of their respective countries since the amnesty began in May, embassy officials were quoted as saying by Arab media.
The embassies, however, were unable to say how many of their illegal nationals had left the country. An official at the Indian embassy said he was not in a position to provide the exact figure of travel passes issued.
However, he said, around 5,000 temporary documents are believed to be issued so far and that the number of illegal Indians availing the amnesty had fallen to about 40 per day.
Sri Lankan ambassador to Kuwait, Sayed Abdul Zuhyle, said 3,520 Sri Lankan illegals were provided with travel documents and that a vast majority of these people were domestic helpers.
The amnesty expires on June 30 and the Interior Ministry has so far not given any indication whether the deadline would be extended.
