The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has suggested that for disposal of solid waste, separately identified trash cans with different colour be placed in different industries locations.
In a communication to the Government of Sindh, City Government and Site Limited, the chamber noted that for industrial solid waste management, the first priority must be for recycling of these wastes. There is an unguent need to prepare inventory of solid waste being generated from both domestic and major industrial units in Sindh.
Such an exercise would be helpful in setting up recycling projects as well as suggesting appropriate methodologies for their safe disposal According to Site Association of Industry (SAI) estimates that the total quantity of solid waste, being generated by the industries in Site is around 2000 to 3000 tonnes per day.
The disposal of non-solid waste is the sole responsibility of Site Limited, which collects the same on alternate days. As regard of sold waste, private contractors collect around 40 to 45 percent for final disposal and remaining 60 percent is dumped by Site limited at designated sites. Despised a large infrastructure and organisation volume, the Site Limited, neither have enough physical facilities nor has proper understanding of handling and disposal of solid waste.
The only disposal mechanism that currently employed by the Site Limited is dumping of waste at the places determined by the city government or incineration in open areas, which itself is hazardous for the neighbourhood. On hectic pursuance of SAI the Site limited launched a cleanliness campaign in Site area in April 2006.
Under the directive of the governor, made a waste management contract with Al-Khalid Agencies to out source collection and transportation of solid waste from the jurisdiction of Site Karachi to the government designated landfill site at Gond Hub River Road on trial basis for two months. For the period of two months trucks were playing on the main roads to pick up debris and garbage but this contract did not get renewed.
