Cholistan Jeep Rally 2007 event would start from March 9, which has been arranged by Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP), Punjab Tourism Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal said during a press conference here on Monday. The Minister said the government was organising rally third time and Rs four million was being spent on the event this year.
"In the past, it was a one-day event but now it has been changed to a two-day event in order to meet the international standards set for desert rally. There are 80 slots for the rally competition and so far 63 participants have been registered for it," he added.
He told the newsmen that the government was spending money to develop southern Punjab and promotion of tourism would be a complement in that effort. He added that the ministry had decided to build a day-resort at Sakhi Sarwar at the cost of Rs 50,000 and for facilitating of tourists, a 23-room four-star hotel would be built in Bahawalpur at the cost of Rs 80 million, while a chair-lift would be constructed at Fort Monro. "All these efforts are part of promoting tourism in southern Punjab," he added.
On the occasion TDCP Managing Director Irfan Ali said that the aim of holding a jeep rally was to promote historical sights of Cholistan. "It is hoped that annual Cholistan rally will become sustainable and grow in the years to come and turn into an international event," he added.
