imageLAHORE: Punjab Governor Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana said on Thursday that demand for livestock and dairy products would increase with the completion of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

He said this while speaking as guest of honour at the 8th convocation of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore at the city campus.

The Governor said that unemployment was no problem in this sector. He called upon student to work hard as the future of the country was linked with their future. He said that a lot of opportunities of research existed in this sector as 70% economy of the country was based on agriculture. He asked the passing-out graduates and Masters degree-holders to contribute to society through their knowledge-based research.

The Governor mentioned many incentives, announced by the government in the form of Kissan Package, soft interest-free loans, etc. However, he said that much more had to be done in this sector.

He also stressed the need for social justice in society and urged the students to take care of the deprived segments of society in their field.

He gave medals and degrees to the position holders. As many as 1,101 graduates including 220 DVM, 238 BS(H), 80 Pharm-D, 39 MBA, 22 MBF, 45 BBA (H), 135 MSc, 270 MPhil and 36 PhDs were conferred degrees along with 44 position-winning graduates.

Earlier, presenting the welcome address, UVAS VC Prof Talat Naseer Pasha spoke about the academic, research, development, extension programmes and community services of the university.

He said that with a history of 134 years of excellence, the UVAS is now positioned among top 10 universities of Pakistan in academic as well as sports and 2nd in agriculture veterinary category.

He said that currently the UVAS faculty members were executing 87 research projects, while the total number of research articles published in journals exceeded 400 mark.

He said that five development projects funded by the Punjab government for establishment of Cholistan University of Veterinary, Bahawalpur, at a cost of Rs 3 million and prevention of missing facilities at Veterinary school Jhang at a cost of Rs 185 million and setting up of Para-veterinary School at Narowal at a cost of Rs 195 million.
