World's oldest 'Ten Commandments Tablet' auctioned off for $850,000

Worlds oldest-known Ten Commandments tablet was auctioned off for a whooping price of $850,000 at a Beverly Hills auction and the buyers identity is yet unknown. However, the acquisition of the relic, which is considered a national treasure of Israel, will be handed over at one critical condition.

According to the delegate, David Michaels who supervises such heritage auctions for ancient coins and antiquities said that the new owner is obligated to display the tablet to the masses for their own benefit and the sale of the tablet does not imply that it is to be hidden away.

The tablet bearing the scripture, measures 2 square feet and weighs about 115 pounds, bearing 20 lines of early Hebrew script called Samaritan. It has nine of the 10 biblical commandments from the book of Exodus.

Experts on the subject have dated the stone slab to the late Roman or Byzantine era, circa 300 to 500 A.D.
