ISLAMABAD: Syed Raghib Abbas Shah, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Member Water has said that WAPDA will build nine model villages to rehabilitate affectees of Diamar- Bhasha dam.
Talking to private news channel, he said "we will get sufficient water for agricultural sector from Diamar-Bhasha dam and barren lands will be made cultivatable after its completion in 8 years while it will also help increase power generation capacity of Tarbela Dam".
He said present government has decided to build 2-3 new small dams in every province under poverty alleviation program, while President Asif Ali Zardari has inaugurated 3-4 such dams.
He said such small dams will help control floods, provision of extra water for agriculture besides power generation for local areas.
Replying to another question, he said WAPDA will give preference to local people for jobs at the dam adding primarily it has set up vocational institute to train local people.
According to the study of WAPDA, Pakistan has capacity of 50,000 MW hydro- power generations, he added.
He said in next few years, there will be revolution in hydro power generation in country as it will get 4500 MW electricity from Diamar Bhasha Dam.
