A Myanmar court sentenced ousted prime minister Khin Nyunt to 44 years in prison on Friday after his conviction on corruption and bribery charges, pprison and legal sources said. Khin Nyunt, purged along with his feared military intelligence empire last October, was indicted on eight counts on July 6 and tried by a special court inside Yangon's Insein Central Prison.
"We heard ex-general Khin Nyunt was sentenced to 44 years' imprisonment for the eight charges," a prison official who declined to be named told Reuters.
Although permitted to retire last year "for health reasons" - a euphemism commonly used when the ruling military junta purges somebody - Khin Nyunt was later denounced in official media for corruption. Two of his sons, one an army lieutenant-colonel and the other a businessman who went on trial in May, were also convicted on Friday for economic offences, legal sources said.
There was no word on their sentences.
Khin Nyunt, who has not been seen since his arrest in October, had refused to hire a lawyer for his trial which began 10 days ago, a prominent lawyer said.
