NEW YORK: US stocks opened slightly higher Thursday after the European Central Bank kept interest rates unchanged but announced new measures to help eurozone banks with additional liquidity.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 6.89 points (0.06 percent) to 10,946.84 in the first minutes of trade.
The broader S&P 500 added 1.10 (0.10 percent) to 1,145.14, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 2.27 (0.03 percent) to 2,466.17.
Weekly new US jobless claims numbers released before the market opened, moving back above the 400,000 line, signaled continuing weakness in the employment sector.
