imageKARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister, holding portfolio of Education, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro Monday said that Sindh Government had increased annual allocation for new educational schemes up to Rs. 13 billion from Rs. 2 billion last year.

He was speaking at a meeting with members of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) here at the Federation House, said FPCCI statement.

He said Sindh Government was working on war footings for the reforms of educational system.

Many international institutes including the World Bank, USAID and JAICA were supporting these initiatives.

A big chunk of educational budget was spent on the salaries of staff, while only 20 percent portion of the budget could be allocated for developmental works.

Rs 110 billion were being spent on the salaries, he explained. Scholarships of Rs. 3000 per student were given to 0.4 million female students throughout Sindh.

He said that primary education was not given due attention in the past.

But, he asserted, now the education act had been changed to promote the education and old educational system had been changed from 2002 to 2013 and the government was taking steps to implement early child education like in other parts of the world.

Nisar Khuhro said that five-year Sindh Education Plan was being worked out and free education and scholarships would be given to those students who could not continue education after class 5 for financial reasons.

He said there were 47,000 primary schools and 117 colleges in Sindh and the government was focusing on raising the standard of education in present educational institutes rather than going for building new schools and colleges.

The government was preparing a rehabilitation plan for educational institutes and 1600 schools would be rehabilitated under this plan during two years.

Moreover, the government had introduced biometrics system in every school to ensure presence of teachers and the salaries were connected with their presence.

The Minister said that 3.9 million text books were sent to needy students through courier service up to April this year.

He said that the government was promoting private sector to serve for education so that every child could get education and become an effective citizen of the society.

Earlier, FPCCI Senior Vice President, S.Khalid Tawab spoke of the problems relating to education in the province.

Chairman of FPCCI standing committee on higher education, science and technology, Sameer Sheikh said that every body should play his due role for promotion of education instead of criticizing the government.

The meeting was also attended by the FPCCI Vice President Hanif Gohar.
