Tokyo shares open higher
TOKYO: Tokyo shares opened 0.42 percent higher on Thursday after the Greek parliament's approval of a crucial austerity package gave a boost to US shares and the euro.
The headline Nikkei-225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange opened up 40.83 points at 9,838.09.
The euro rose to the likely benefit of Japanese exporters, Hiroichi Nishi, general manager of equity at Nikko Cordial Securities, told Dow Jones Newswires.
He noted, however, that trading volume would likely remain light as investors await the Bank of Japan's quarterly "tankan" survey of corporate sentiment and US ISM manufacturing data, both on Friday.
US stocks rallied on Wednesday after the Greek parliament approved an unpopular austerity plan, warding off the risk of a sovereign default that could destabilise Europe's financial system.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 72.73 points (0.60 percent) to close at 12,261.42.
The euro fetched 116.62 yen in early Tokyo trade, almost in line with levels in New York late Wednesday but up from the lower 116-yen range a day earlier.
The single European currency also rose to $1.4465 from $1.4429 in New York late Wednesday. The dollar edged down to 80.67 yen from 80.80 yen.
