PARIS: French consumer spending on manufactured goods fell by 1.8 percent in April as sales of new cars slowed following an end to government subsidies, the INSEE statistics agency said on Tuesday.
Spending on durable goods fell by 6.3 percent in April following a 1.2 percent fall in March, which INSEE said was "due in large part to a sharp drop in automobiles" of 10.2 percent.
Sales of household furnishings also fell, by 1.5 percent, following a 0.6 percent dip in March.
Fine weather contributed to a 3.2 percent drop in spending on energy, while consumers shelled out 0.8 percent more on food.
